EXTERIOR
This remarkable and unrestored top of the range for comfort Mk3 Escort Ghia is finish in Ford Quartz Gold, (Code 1 5), a factory cost option. This well-preserved example is structurally incredible and all factory panels are straight with uniform gaps. A tiny ding to the boot lid, scratch to the lower rear valance and minimal and faint touched in markings throughout take nothing away from the impressive appeal of this original 11,887-mile example. The plastic trim sections are fully intact but show some light scuffs and one small crack to the nearside front quarter bumper. The extensive and factory original brightwork to the windows, belt line and lights is remarkably well preserved. Originality seekers will be further delighted to see all brown tinted glass factory etched with the registration number and all light clusters are factory Ford and Hella fitment. A once common sight, this lovely Ford Escort is sure to stir up nostalgia.
INTERIOR
Finish in plush ‘Ghia’ spec Savoy and Crushed Velour trim in Mocha colour scheme, (Code MR), the pristine seats and condition of the materials is fully commensurate with such a low mileage example, as are the steering wheel, gear shift and switchgear that display natural surface veins only found on such minimal use cars. The matching door cards and colour keyed cut pile carpets have defied the years remarkably. All switchgear is functional and intact, and the soft finish dashboard, incredibly for this model, is completely uncracked and not warped. The trimmed parcel shelf is intact, straight and complete with the correct rubber hangers and even has the ultra-rare genuine Ford rear sun blinds still fitted! The original cost option fit Ford ECU1 stereo cassette remains fitted and operational but with a partially failed display screen. This beautifully well-preserved interior is exactly as Ford intended, a real delight for the enthusiast.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The time proven transverse mounted 1600 OHC engine with single variable-venturi carburettor develops 79bhp, achieving a top speed of 101mph and 0-60mph in 11.9 seconds. The engine is wonderfully quiet and smooth and has just benefitted from a major service, inspection, cambelt and water pump renewal and brand-new battery. The standard specification automatic choke and electronic ignition are both present and correct, and operate perfectly. The factory optional automatic oil-cooled transmission is effortless to use and operates precisely is it should. Combined with power steering, this really is the ultimate relaxing retroride!
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The standard steel wheels wear full Ghia wheel covers which remain in excellent condition. All road wheels are shod in matching brand-new premium Uniroyal Rainsport 3 155/80 R13 tyres fitted in December 2019 which replaced the original Michelin XZX items still found on the spare. Diagonally split hydraulic circuit servo assisted brakes with ventilated 9.4” front discs and rear drums bring the car up to a steady, straight and assured halt.
HISTORY FILE
Supplied by Ford Main Dealers, Billingham’s of Wolverhampton, and registered new on 18th October 1984 to first owner, a Mrs A Frost, this delightful example has covered a remarkably low and fully verified 11,887 miles from new. KGF Classic Cars purchased the car from the previous owner’s Nephew, Mr David Howe, after he fell in love with our Yamaha FS1E ‘Fizzy’. Mr Howe explained that upon the passing of his Aunt, he recovered the car from her dry garage in West Wales after she had, many years before, moved there from North London with her beloved neighbours! Both neighbours had sold their North London homes and purchased a large bungalow with the intention of dividing it into two homes. Such was their cherished friendship, the bungalow was kept as one and they all shared this Escort, living happily ever after!
The Ford wallet houses all the new car sales leaflets, handbooks, service book, driver’s manuals and radio guides. A further history folder contains service invoices as well as every single MOT certificate from the first in 1988 to 2009 when the car stopped being used and was put into a dry heated garage. KGF Classic Cars have in December 2019 undertaken recommissioning work to include a major service, inspection, cambelt and water pump renewal and brand-new battery as well as four new premium Uniroyal brand tyres. Three sets of Ford keys with dealer fob are present. Both having defied common expectations, this truly wonderful story befits an equally remarkable honest car.
MOT January 2021, HPI Clear.
